THE ACTIVE OILTRAWL
During the NOSCA seminar the 8-11th of May, the active oiltrawl was tested with satisfying results.
The AO is a combined oil containment and recovery system designed by BP/Amoco to meet Governmental requirements for acute oil pollution, emergency preparedness for oil companies operating on the Norwegian continental shelf.
The main requirement is that the recovery equipment shall have a minimum recovery rate of 50 m3/h, launched within one hour - and is capable of sweeping an area of 0.1 km2 minimum, within two hours of an oil pollution alert.
The AO is a compact, cost effective and rapid deployment system, utilizing compressed air inflation which instantly inflates the system as it is deployed from a reel. The AO is capable of collecting oil in any towing speed suitable for oil recovery operations and is available in near-shore oil spill clean up operation, as well as in confined areas such as estuaries.
The patented AS system consists of three main components;
- the UNIBOOM rapid deployment boom
- a specially designed tube-shaped peristaltic wave pump
- a temporary storage bladder
The storage bladder has a drainage outlet at the bottom so that sea-water can escape freely through the system while the oil emulsion is trapped within the bladder.
For instance, 300m (1000 ft) of offshore boom and a 300 m3 (US Gal 80.000) temporary storage bladder stored on a winder can be launched and deployed by two persons in less than 40 minutes.
